Hooghly, West Bengal - In a shocking incident that has left the community in disbelief, a stepmother was apprehended by local authorities for allegedly selling her 6-month-old stepchild for a sum of 1.5 lakh rupees. The heart-wrenching case came to light when concerned neighbors reported suspicious activities to the police. This incident is from Chandannagar in Hooghly district.
According to the police and local sources, Pinky Gupta the step mother of a 6-month-old, Maman, was reluctant to accept any charges during interrogation. The police then started checking the CCTV footage of Chunchuda Bada Bazar and Jorghat area, and saw that the child was seen being taken on a scooter. After that Pinky broke down and accepted all allegations.
Accordingly, the child was sold to Ramen Debnath in Chandannagar for Rs 1.5 lakh. Pinky and her associates got their share of the money. The child was first taken by scooter an then on an auto-rickshaw.
A team led by Chunchuda Police Station IC Anupam Chakraborty raided Chandannagar. The children were then freed from the house of the accused. Among those arrested, Ramen Debnath, Pinky Gupta, Sangeeta Biswas, Baby Adhikari and Kakali Chakraborty will be presented in Chunchuda court today.
DCP Bidit Raj Bundesh of Chandannagar police said that this crime was planned and organised. As per preliminary investigation, the accused accepted that the children were bought and sold for lakhs of rupees. The child was abducted for money.
